Silent TV

it just occured to me that when you watch tv with the sound off, it's a lot like listening to instrumental/classical music -

you get the images (or sounds in my analogy) and it's up to you to piece the plot together. you don't know where it's going, and you have to just relinquish control and let yourself be taken along, creating the narrative backwards as you go.

i think that's why we tend to enjoy classical music more when we've already heard the piece and studied it in terms of its historical context, composer, and what it's "about", before hand - in the same way, if you've already heard about/seen/read the book of a show/movie, it's easier to watch with the sound off.

i just think it's cool that when you turn the sound off you suddenly are called to rise up to the occasion and tell yourself a story - it makes watching tv into a much more interesting event. it also requires a lot more to keep focused on it - your brain keeps going off in a million directions, including the one that led me to write this. oh, and commercials are MUCH easier to ignore, and so much more transparent.

i don't know, it's 5 a.m. and we're still here mixing. my brain's a bit fuzzy...

btw, food tv is still pretty great to watch when you don't have sound...as are mythbusters, most cartoons and anything by david lynch (but especially twin peaks).
